The Trout fishing has been excellent, the Bass are in the shallows, and the Crappie bite has been the best in many years. Even the Catfish are biting well now. Right now is the best fishing of the year!
Nice-sized Crappie are in the shallows and are being found off Bass Point and at the West Buoy Line. Small golden shiners and small finger jigs work best to attract them. Salt and Pepper and yellow/white jigs are the colors that have been working best. Hank Oung of Spring Valley landed the largest Crappie this past week. Hank's 2#1 Crappie hit a salt/pepper jig off Bass Point. Hank caught his 25-fish Crappie limit both weekend mornings.
Trout fishing remains excellent with some nice limits of rainbows being weighed in. The best Trout baits have been rainbow power bait and inflated night crawlers. Hank Oung of Spring Valley caught a 5#7 Rainbow Trout on a Salt & Pepper jig off Bass Point.
The Bass are in the shallow waters to spawn and many smaller males are biting very well. We expect a lot of large females to be taken during the next 5 weeks. Xay Keooudom of San Marcos landed a 5#4 Bass that nailed a Night Crawler near Bass Point. Swim bait lures and plastic worms have been the best baits for Bass lately. The shad have just moved in tight to the bank though, so shad-looking lures should be the ticket to success this week.
Limits of small to medium-sized Channel Catfish have been striking night crawlers in Oakvale Cove and around the South Shore Rockpile.
