The Trout fishing has been excellent, the Bass are in the shallows, and the Crappie bite has been the best in many years. Even the Catfish are biting well now. The best fishing of the year is upon us!
Nice-sized Crappie are in the shallows and are being found off Bass Point and at the West Buoy Line. Small golden shiners and small finger jigs work best to attract them. Salt and Pepper and yellow/white jigs are the colors that have been working best. Flor Abena of San Diego caught his 25 fish limit of Crappie 3 days in a row using salt/pepper jigs between Boat Dock Cove and Crappie Rock.
Trout fishing remains excellent with some nice limits of rainbows being weighed in. The best Trout baits have been rainbow power bait and inflated night crawlers. Myra Chastain of Escondido landed a 6#8 Rainbow Trout on a Night Crawler in Boat Dock Cove.
The Bass are in the shallow waters to spawn and many smaller males are biting very well. We expect a lot of large females to be taken during the next 4 weeks. Swim bait lures and plastic worms have been the best baits for Bass lately. The shad have just moved in tight to the bank though, so shad-looking lures should soon be the ticket to success.
Limits of small to medium-sized Channel Catfish have been striking night crawlers in Oakvale Cove and around the South Shore Rockpile.
