In order to protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a temporary ban on private water craft and private equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment now includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contact the water.

Fishing for Catfish has been good. The July 15 plant was smaller than expected. We anticipate an additional or larger Catfish plant sometime in August to compensate for the difference. The best baits for Catfish are cut mackerel or chicken liver and near either buoy line are the best locations. Drop by the Ranger Station for a (dough bait) recipe that works great on both Catfish and Carp.

The Bass fishing is at its best during the early mornings and late afternoons. On Saturday, Anton Neumann of Escondido caught and released a 7#12 Bass caught off the South Shore Rockpile on a jig. Bass are being caught mostly on crawdads, shad raps, or dark-colored plastics.

Crappie can be found around submerged willows and shady outcroppings. Crappie respond well to finger jigs and live golden shiners. Smaller-sized Bluegill are hitting red worms or meal worms.

Each month, Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For further information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
