Water Level: Low level; private water crafts are currently banned
In order to protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a
temporary ban on private water craft and private equipment that could have been
exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment now includes private boats, canoes,
kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that
contact the water.
Trout fishing is good and likely to improve with only a week between stocks. Some
nice-sized limits of rainbows are being caught. Willow Cove and Boat Dock Cove
have had the best Trout action and nightcrawlers have been the most consistent bait.
Victor Sarabia of Escondido weighed in a stringer of five Trout totaling 18#8, which
he caught on green power bait in Willow Cove. The largest of his catches weighed in
at 5#2. Young Squire Greenlee of Valley Center landed a 4#1 Trout in Boat Dock
Cove on a green power worm.
The water is warming and the Bass are moving into the shallows. Jose Garlejo of
Escondido caught a 7#12 Bass on a 6-inch plastic worm at the South Shore Rockpile.
Four new Bass-type rental boats are now available at Lake Wohlford. They sport 40#
thrust trolling motors, dual swivel seats, and a live well. They rent for $50 for the
entire day.
Crappie are appearing more frequently in the rocky outcroppings. Walter Blevins of
Bonsall caught a 1#8 Crappie on a black and green jig at the South Shore Rockpile.
Catfish are starting to bite as the weather warms up. They respond well to cut
mackerel or chicken liver and are easiest to find at either buoy line. Kalea Pryor, all
the way from Mayo, Florida, caught a 4#5 Channel Cat in Willow Cove on a
nightcrawler. Carp action is heating up as well.
