Launch Conditions: PRIVATE WATER CRAFTS ARE CURRENTLY BANNED
Lake Wohlford returns to a 7-day a week schedule starting Saturday, December 15, when our Trout season opens. In order to protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is a temporary ban on private water craft and private equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment now includes boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, etc.
Just prior to opening morning, 4,800 pounds of Rainbow Trout will be stocked! The hatchery will be delivering the largest-sized (brood stock) Trout of the year with this load! The water level is low, but the clarity is better than usual. Good weather is in the forecast, so ideal conditions are likely for opening weekend! Top baits are expected to be night crawlers, power bait (green and rainbow), power worms (white), and shiny spinners. Best Trout action is likely to be along Senior Shoreline and Boat Dock Cove in the absence of easterly winds.
Catfish action has been very good with some nice-sized whisker fish coming in. The best baits have been cut mackerel and chicken liver.
The Bass are out in deeper water now and Bass action has been slow. Senko worms, Swim bait lures, and plastic worms have been working best.
Each month, Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For further information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
