Hello from your Lake Jennings!
Rain or shine Lake Jennings is the place to be for some of the best trout fishing and camping in the county. We had a few good showers over the weekend which didn't slow down the trout fishing at all. For those willing to suit up for the weather, the trout fishing was great with several limits and a steady bite over the weekend.
Lake Jennings will be open for Martin Luther King Jr Day, observed on Monday, January 19th. There will be 1,200 pounds of Nebraska Tailwalker Trout stocked sometime this week which will make for a good upcoming 3-day weekend.
The bass continue to bite, but all the 2 digits are being very cautious. All fish are sitting in the deeper waters this time of year, and we've seen trout limits coming from the 60' depth. For those "site fishing" with mini jigs, it's all about the shoreline and walking. No reports on cats or panfish this week.
A friendly reminder about the New Year. With a new year comes a new California State Fishing License, which is required to fish at Lake Jennings for all anglers age 16 and above. We don't sell the license so please purchase one before you come out, and once here, you will need to purchase the daily fishing permit. State fishing licenses can be purchased at your local bait and tackle shop, Wal-Mart or online at https://www.ca.wildlifelicense.com/InternetSales/.
If you're trout fishing keep your eyes open for "tagged trout", and if you hook up bring your catch to the Bait & Tackle shop to be recorded. All tags must be verified at the Lake Jennings Bait & Tackle shop. Blue tags get you two fishing passes for Lake Jennings and all other colors are for Turner's Outdoorsman. Turner's tags are numbered and can be matched to the prize at the Bait & Tackle shop. Once verified and recorded at Lake Jennings, you simply visit the new Turner's Outdoorsman in El Cajon to redeem your prize.
Turner's is also this year's sponsor for "Largest Trout" each month. Congratulations to Joel Murillo for catching an 8 pound 12 ounce Nebraska Tailwalker. Joel is the winner for December 2014 and will receive a Daiwa D-Shock trout rod and reel combo with Izorline. Prizes for the monthly giveaways are picked up from the Lake Jennings Bait & Tackle shop on Friday, Saturday or Sunday during normal lake hours of operation. Turner's has already dropped off next month's prize, so come on out to Lake Jennings to see what's next and give your best shot at being the first winner for the new year 2015.
Fishing is allowed during the week when the lake is closed by visiting the campground kiosk between the hours of 7:30 am and 5:00 pm. Purchase your permit to fish and be sure to record your trout at the kiosk so you can be entered into the monthly giveaway. If you're in El Cajon be sure to check out the new Turner's Outdoorsman and let them know how much we appreciate their support. The "Largest Trout" each month will go on every month through April.
The Lake Jennings Campground has availability for the upcoming months so grab your camping and fishing gear and get an early start each morning. Plus, every Saturday there's Arts & Crafts and S'mores, a campfire and storytelling for all registered campers and their friends.
