Hello from your Lake Jennings!
Please check bottom of report for some exciting news! Friday, May 17th was the start of Night Fishing and I would like to start by thanking all those who participated in the opening. Just before the gates opened there was a line down the street. Both anglers and those out to enjoy a packed dinner came in all throughout the night. The view of the lanterns on boats and on shore was spectacular. The lake opened the next morning at 5:30 am, Saturday and again it was nonstop until closing at midnight. The night fishing will continue until Labor Day Weekend and keep in mind that the lake will be open every day for the month of July. The catfish bite was great with several anglers catching limits using mackerel and the highest number of cats came from Hermit Cove with Bird Trees in second. Bass cooperated just as well with several fishermen anxious to fish at night. Bass were all around the lake and early Sunday there were short eruptions of a topwater bite but plastics on a dropshot worked best. There were some people looking for redears but only a couple of biters. No sign of trout.
Best Catfish Spots: Hermit Cove and Bird Trees
Best Catfish Bait: Mackerel
Best Bass Spots: Points in 15' to 35' of water and the riprap bordering the launch ramp and Eagle Point. See GPS for that spot.
Best Bass Lures/Bait: Flylined nightcrawlers for the guardian males, Senko's and a dropshot with morning dawn worms
Best Trout Spots: Between the boat dock and the fishing float
Best Trout Bait: The bait that catches the most trout is nightcrawlers trolled down 5 to 6 colors
Notables: Friday, Suu Van Tran, San Diego, Limit of Catfish, Hermit Cove, Mackerel; Friday, Nik Worsdell, San Diego, Limit of Catfish with the largest at 4 lb. 4 oz., Hermit Cove, Chicken Liver; Saturday, James Hitchcock, Lemon Grove, 4 ?? pound Large Mouth Bass, Half Moon Cove, Texas rigged Margarita Mutilator.
Prognosis: The channel cats have moved into the shallows. Cast into brush and you'll get either a bass or a cat. When we cruise the shoreline we see a lot of cats in less than 5 ft. of water. The next 2 weeks will probably be your last chance for trout. Fish deep water off the fishing float or use a boat in the same area.
