Lake Wohlford will remain closed on weekdays until opening day of trout season which is scheduled for December 10th.

In order to protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a temporary ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors and other equipment that contacts the water.

Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motorboats to seniors on Tuesdays and to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month.

The fishing overall showed a big improvement this last weekend in comparison with the past couple of weeks.

The bass fishing seems to be picking up again. Chris Linker of Valley Center caught and released a 6.70# Bass Saturday on spinnerbait in Boat Dock Cove. That same day Clement Miner weighed in a 4.20# largemouth he caught and released at the South Shore Rock Pile on a plastic worm. Bass can be found near rock piles especially in the morning and late afternoons. Dark colored plastics do particularly well.

It was a good weekend for catfish as well with a 17.60# hauled in by Jim Knight of Escondido using Mackerel at the South Shore Rock pile.

Crappie are beginning to appear also, and not only here, but at Lake Dixon as well, which is a rarity. Wendell Jackson weighed in a .75# Crappie on Sunday in Boat Dock Cove on a live golden shiner. It was the first crappie to be weighed in for some time and may be a sign of better things to come. The crappie prefer the cover of shade or submerged willows in which to hide they are most often caught using finger jigs or live golden shiners.

Each month Whopper Contest winners in 4 categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For further information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
