The trout are becoming scarcer but can still be found in small numbers in the western most portions of Oakvale Cove and near the buoys. Warmer water temperatures have pushed the trout into the deeper areas of the lake. The best baits have been powerbait and/or powerworms, or inflated nightcrawlers.

Bass of varying sizes are being caught in good numbers. Crawdads and dark colored plastics seem to be working best. Bass can be found near rock piles especially in the morning and late afternoons.

Crappie are being caught almost exclusively in the early mornings. Bill Baker of Carlsbad caught a 2.10# Crappie on an orange jig at Bass Point on Memorial Day. Joel Gunther of Oceanside caught a 1.95# crappie near a solar bee (aerator) on a green jig last Saturday. Crappie are most often caught using small jigs or live golden shiners.

The first of four catfish plants is scheduled for July 1st. Catfish are becoming easier to find throughout the lake and prefer cut mackerel or chicken liver. For an excellent dough bait recipe that works well for catfish or carp stop by the ranger station.
