Wow, what a spring! Fish, fish and more fish...just we weren't able to get out to catch them.

In the winter and spring Ocean Odyssey takes classes of students out on field trips for the San Diego Floating Lab and that work keeps us very busy. On March 13 we were ordered to cease operation, and the rest is, well, pretty boring.

Captain Rick did some maintenance and went hunting a little. Dina made busy work for herself, and baked a lot of banana bread. We hauled the boat out for a tune up for a few days, just tried to stay busy and not go bonkers wondering when we would be able to take you out fishing again.

On June 7th, after a lot of letter writing, phone calls, and public pressure the State of California and City of San Diego agreed that sportfishing could resume operation. It has been full speed work since then. Re-hiring crew, Coast Guard safety inspection, galley provisioning, safety and sanitation training...you get the picture.

We will have our first trip departing tonight. While the boat and the fishing is still the same, the way we do things has changed. The County Health Department in San Diego has required face covering for everyone in a public setting, so we will be requiring face coverings. An illness acknowledgement will be given to everyone onboard to sign. You will be required to bring your own bedding: pillow, blanket, sleeping bag, sheet, whatever makes you comfortable, there will not be any available onboard. There will be shift seating at meal time, and we will ask that you try to the best of your ability to practice social distancing.

Fishing for the big bluefin has been the game for the past few days, with good grade yellowtail and there have been some yellowfin and dorado mixed in randomly. Be prepared for mid to large model tunas and one lighter outfit for the smaller fish.

There are many trips available with open availability if you would like to sign up. There are also some weekends available for your larger group if you want to charter out the whole boat. Give the office a call at (619) 889-4535 and we will be happy to discuss dates with you. Below is a brief description of the open trips available, just click on the 'Sign Up Today' button and you will be taken to the Ocean Odyssey website where you can make your reservation.
