The catfish bite has been spotty and the season, as a whole, has been somewhat of a disappointment, so far. The best baits for catfish are cut mackerel or chicken liver and the East end of the lake is probably the best location. Stop by the ranger station for a dough-bait recipe that works well for both catfish and carp.
Mostly smaller bass have been biting in the early mornings and early evenings. Jim Johnson of Escondido caught and released a 4.95# Bass using a plastic worm west of Senior Shoreline. Dark colored plastics and crawdads have been productive of late. Bass can most often be found lingering around submerged rock piles.
Crappie are biting occasionally in the mornings and afternoons. Jerrold Johnson of Ontario, Ca padded his lead in the Whopper Contest when he weighed in a 1.80# Crappie he caught on a jig in boat dock Cove. Live golden shiners and crappie jigs work best with the crappie which prefer the cover of shade or the protection of submerged trees in which to hide.
Lake Wohlford will be closed weekdays beginning September 6th and stay that way until December with the opening of Trout season. The lake will remain open on weekends throughout.
