Good solid fishing on the Truckee River.

Flows are back up near the 500 range here in Hirschdale and higher below thanks to water coming out of Lake Tahoe. The whole river is in great shape with great flows. I bet you can catch trout in about 80 river miles right now.

Typical summertime weather. Cool in the mornings and hot in the afternoons. Mainly, I kinda do half day trips until it cools back down in later August. You can get me out late in the evenings, but it’s just too hot out there up and down the canyons in the afternoons. If you want to fish all day, come see me the other 10 months out of the year. Remember, the Truckee River is a freestone and the water can and will warm in the afternoons shutting of the bite.

Nymphing with caddis, stones and crayfish are the deal. Fish the pocket water, or sections of river with fast gradient. Get in there and don’t be afraid to wade around. Get a staff if you need too, or some of those aluminum studs for your boots. The amount and quality of fish this time of year on the Truckee River pretty much comes down to how well you can get around in it.

Funny, I get a lot of newbies this time of year and their definition of fly fishing is something they see on a commercial with the retired guy casting dry flies at dusk or something. Sure, we do dry fly fish, but the game on the Truckee is nymphing, most especially if you’ve never held a fly rod and you want to actually catch a fish. If nymphing is not your thing go fish right before dark, or go try to fire some off out on the Little Truckee mid-day now. You will see pale morning duns and green drakes and lots of guides and people.

Hope everyone has a great and safe 4th of July. I will post for another tight line nymph clinic this week on July 28.
