Cubera Snapper

Oceans & Range: Western Atlantic Ocean — from New Jersey south through Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean to Brazil. The largest snapper in the Atlantic — a powerful, deep-bodied fish found around offshore reefs, wrecks, and rocky ledges in 60–200 feet. Also called the Cuban Snapper. Adults are deep-water fish; juveniles inhabit nearshore structure.

Preferred Water Temperature: 68°F–82°F. An offshore reef species found around hard structure, ledges, and wrecks in warm tropical and subtropical water. Often found in the same areas as Red Snapper and Grouper.

Size & Weight: Typically 20–50 lbs. Trophy fish exceed 100 lbs. World record: 121 lbs 8 oz from Louisiana. The largest snapper in the Western Atlantic — a massive, powerfully built fish with canine teeth. Fights exceptionally hard for its size — immediately dives for structure when hooked.

Best Lures: Large vertical jigs dropped to the base of offshore structure produce strikes. Heavy swimbaits work near bottom. Large bucktail jigs tipped with cut bait are effective.

Best Baits: Large live blue runners are the top bait. Large live pigfish and pinfish produce trophy fish. Whole fresh-dead large squid are effective. Large live crabs attract big fish. Heavy tackle with 60–80 lb fluorocarbon leader is required for fish this powerful near structure.
