Rock Sole

Oceans & Range: North Pacific Ocean — from Korea and Japan across the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands south to Southern California. Common in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. Found on sandy and rocky bottom in 10–600 feet. A right-eyed flounder with distinctive reddish-orange spots on the eyed side.

Preferred Water Temperature: 34°F–52°F. A cold-water Pacific flatfish found on sandy to rocky bottom in a wide depth range. Very common in Alaskan waters — an important commercial and recreational species in the North Pacific.

Size & Weight: Typically 1–3 lbs and 12–18 inches. Maximum approximately 5 lbs. World record: 3 lbs 2 oz. Distinguished by rows of orange-red spots in a distinctive ridge pattern on the eyed side. Good table fish — mild, white meat.

Best Lures: Small jigs near sandy bottom produce catches. Blade baits work at moderate depths.

Best Baits: Fresh shrimp are the top bait. Fresh squid works consistently. Clam pieces are effective. Pile worms produce results in shallower areas. Bottom rigs with fresh bait over sandy to rocky bottom are standard.
