Size & Weight: Typically 2–6 lbs and 18–28 inches. Maximum approximately 12 lbs. World record: 21 lbs 3 oz. A slender, fast-moving predator with sharp teeth. An excellent light tackle species — fast, powerful, and acrobatic. Good eating if iced immediately.

Best Baits: Live anchovies fly-lined are excellent. Live sardines work consistently. Dead anchovies on a fast-moving sliding sinker rig produce. Small live mackerel are very effective for larger fish.

Range

Habitat

California barracuda are pelagic schooling fish that inhabit nearshore coastal waters, typically from the surface down to depths of about 60 feet, though they can be found deeper. They prefer water temperatures between 59°F and 73°F, with peak activity occurring in warmer conditions. These fish are commonly found around kelp beds, rocky reefs, offshore banks, and near jetties and piers where baitfish concentrate. Barracuda often patrol the edges of kelp forests and open water, using structure as ambush points. They favor clear water with good visibility, which aids their sight-based hunting strategy. During warmer months, schools move into shallow bays, harbors, and surf zones following schools of anchovies, sardines, and other forage fish. They are surface-oriented predators that frequently feed in the upper water column, though they will sound to mid-depths when pursuing prey or avoiding pressure.

Tackle & Bait

Best Lures:
Chrome surface iron jigs (Salas, Tady) in 1–3 oz sizes are the classic lure — worked fast near the surface. Feather jigs trolled at moderate speed produce strikes. Spoons and small stickbaits work well. Any flashy, fast-moving lure produces strikes from feeding fish.
