Yellowfin Croaker
Oceans & Range: Eastern Pacific Ocean — from Point Conception, California south to the Gulf of California. Found in the surf zone, sandy beaches, and shallow nearshore areas in 0–30 feet. A common Southern California surf species — one of the most abundant croakers in the surf zone alongside California Corbina. Makes audible drumming sounds.
Preferred Water Temperature: 60°F–74°F. A nearshore surf species found on sandy beaches and in shallow bay areas of Southern California. Most abundant in summer in the surf zone. Feeds actively in the wave wash on sand crabs, worms, and small crustaceans.
Size & Weight: Typically 0.5–2 lbs and 10–14 inches. Maximum approximately 4 lbs. World record: 4 lbs 3 oz. Distinctive yellow fins — particularly the yellow pectoral fins. Good eating — white, mild meat. A fun light tackle surf species.
Best Lures: Small soft plastic baits in sand crab colors produce strikes in the surf. Small tube jigs work near sandy bottom.
Best Baits: Fresh sand crabs (mole crabs) from the surf zone are the top bait. Ghost shrimp are excellent. Fresh shrimp work consistently. Fresh mussels produce results. Light surf gear with 8–12 lb line and small hooks (#4–8) in the wave wash is standard.
