Range

Eastern Pacific Ocean — from Baja California south through Central America and down to Peru. Found in nearshore coastal waters, around offshore islands, and over rocky reefs in warm tropical and subtropical water. A medium-sized jack common in the Gulf of California and along the Pacific coast of Mexico and Central America.

How to Catch Spanish Jack

Equipment

68°F–80°F. Found in warm nearshore tropical water of the Eastern Pacific. A schooling, aggressive predator found near rocky structure and in open coastal water.

Tackle & Bait

<strong>Best Lures:</strong>
Small to medium poppers produce strikes. Chrome spoons and jigs work well. Any flashy fast-moving lure in a feeding school produces strikes.

<strong>Best Baits:</strong>
Live small fish are excellent. Small live crabs work near rocky structure. Fresh squid produces consistent results.

Game Qualities

Typically 5–15 lbs. Maximum approximately 25 lbs. World record: 8 lbs 9 oz. A streamlined, powerful jack with excellent fighting ability. Good eating — firm, white meat typical of the jack family.
