Sargo

<p><strong>Oceans &amp; Range:</strong> Eastern Pacific Ocean — from Point Conception, California south to Mazatlán, Mexico and throughout the Gulf of California. Found in rocky areas, kelp beds, and sandy bottom near structure in 5–130 feet. A common catch in Southern California kelp beds and around rocky reefs. A distinctive silver fish with a single dark vertical bar across the shoulder.</p>
<p><strong>Preferred Water Temperature:</strong> 58°F–70°F. Found in rocky areas of Southern California bays, kelp beds, and around nearshore structure. Common around kelp forest margins and rocky reefs.</p>
<p><strong>Size &amp; Weight:</strong> Typically 0.5–2 lbs and 10–16 inches. Maximum approximately 4 lbs. World record: 3 lbs 12 oz. A distinctive silver grunt with a dark vertical bar. Good eating — mild, white meat.</p>
<p><strong>Best Lures:</strong> Small jigs and soft plastics near rocky bottom produce catches. Small swimbaits work around kelp edges.</p>
<p><strong>Best Baits:</strong> Fresh mussels are the classic Sargo bait — mussels are a primary natural food. Fresh clams produce excellent results. Fresh shrimp and squid work well. Small pieces of crab are effective. Light spinning tackle with small hooks near rocky structure is appropriate.</p>
