Ocean Whitefish

<p><strong>Oceans &amp; Range:</strong> Eastern Pacific Ocean — from British Columbia south to Peru, most abundant from Point Conception south through Baja California. Found around rocky reefs, kelp beds, and over sandy bottom adjacent to structure in 10–400 feet. A common catch on Southern California and Baja party boats targeting mixed bottom species.</p>
<p><strong>Preferred Water Temperature:</strong> 58°F–70°F. Found around rocky structure and kelp beds in Southern California and Baja waters. Often found mid-water over sandy bottom areas near rocky reef edges.</p>
<p><strong>Size &amp; Weight:</strong> Typically 2–7 lbs and 15–24 inches. Maximum approximately 15 lbs. World record: 13 lbs 9 oz. A slender, yellowish-tan fish. Excellent eating — fine, white, sweet meat. A favored catch on party boats.</p>
<p><strong>Best Lures:</strong> Small jigs worked at mid-depth produce strikes. Small swimbaits work well around structure. Feather jigs produce catches when fish are visible mid-water.</p>
<p><strong>Best Baits:</strong> Fresh whole squid are the top bait. Fresh anchovies work very well. Fresh shrimp produce consistent results. Slow-sinking rigs with fresh bait near structure are effective. A fun, hard-fighting species that makes excellent table fare.</p>
